### Preparation

#### Environmental Requirements

In addition to network planning, when determining where to place the GXC Onyx FHM you need to consider factors such as climate, hydrology, geology, the possibility of earthquakes, reliable electric power, and transportation access.

Avoid locating the unit in areas where there may be extreme temperatures, harmful gases, unstable voltages, excessive vibrations, open flames, explosives, or electromagnetic interference (e.g., large radar stations, transformer substations). Avoid areas prone to impounded water, soaking, leakage, or condensation. The following table lists the environmental specifications.

<p align="center"><strong>Environmental Specifications</strong></p>

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">Item</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Operating Temperature</td><td>-40° to 65°C / -40 to 149°F</td></tr><tr><td>Relative Humidity</td><td>5 % to 95 % RH (non-condensing)</td></tr><tr><td>Atmospheric Pressure</td><td>70 kPa to 106 kPa</td></tr><tr><td>Operating voltage</td><td>100 to 240VAC (Universal)</td></tr><tr><td>Typical Power Consumption</td><td>300W (max typical)</td></tr></tbody></table>

#### Mounting Considerations

The GXC Onyx FHM has a unit width of 17.32 inches (440mm), as shown above. The unit ships with rack mount brackets suitable for EIA-Standard 19-inch (483 mm) racks. The rack mount brackets can be installed at the front or in the center of the unit.

The depth of the Onyx FHM chassis is 9.84 inches (250mm) without the field replaceable PSUs. To accommodate the air inlet and front cabling, a minimum clearance of 6 inches (152mm) in front of the unit is specified, thereby making the minimum reserve depth 15.84 inches (402.3mm).

The 19-inch Rack Mount Brackets included with the GXC Onyx FHM can be utilized to mount the unit in two different positions relative to the front of the unit.

The Front Mount Approach is more commonly used for rack-mounted equipment. However, this mounting approach results in increased stress on the mounting brackets due to the center of gravity of the unit being behind the mounting point. These stresses can be resolved by installing the unit directly above other equipment that is supported by rear posts of a 4-post rack or the use of a 1U Rack Shelf.

Alternatively, a Center Mount Approach can be used for the GXC Onyx FHM. In this approach, the 19-inch Rack Mount Brackets are affixed to the unit at the center of depth mounting location. This approach reduces stress on the mounting brackets by mounting the unit at a depth very close to its center of gravity. However, utilizing this mounting approach causes the front of the Onyx FHM to protrude from the front of the rack by approximately 4.40 inches (112mm).

The following figure depicts typical Front Mount and Center Mount orientations for the GXC Onyx FHM in a 19-inch rack.

#### Equipment Cooling

The GXC Onyx FHM utilizes internal fans to intake air from the front to cool the internal electronics. Heat is transferred to this air and then exhausted out the back of the unit. Care should be taken during installation to ensure that adjacent equipment in the same rack uses this same front-to-back airflow orientation.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**CAUTION:** Failure to ensure adjacent equipment utilizes a front-to-back airflow orientation can lead to elevated intake air temperatures, a reduction in the operational air temperature margins, and possible reductions in operation stability of the Onyx FHM.
{% endhint %}

<p align="center"><strong>Front-to-Back Airflow Depiction</strong></p>

<figure><img src="https://4084968256-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FgSxa0NIdBp5aDw7Lf2N9%2Fuploads%2FnEcsqEJcDnfks8NBf412%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=e566dffb-abaa-4562-b897-14fd736565f4" alt="" width="506"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The GXC Onyx FHM requires clearance at the front and back of the unit to ensure adequate airflow to the unit. Care should be taken to avoid equipment cables or other materials from blocking both the intake and the exhaust vents to the unit.

## Pre Installation

This section describes the recommended location and environment required for best performance of the Onyx FHM and the materials and tools needed to install the Onyx FHM.

### Installation Location

The Onyx FHM is designed to be installed in either a 19-inch standard rack or chassis that conforms to EIA-310 dimensions, or to be mounted flush to a wall.

When front mounted in a 19-inch Rack or Chassis, the rack or chassis must have a front-to-back clearance (depth) of no less than 10.9 inches (277mm).

The Onyx FHM is air cooled by its integrated fans and relies on intake air that has a temperature of -40°C to 65°C. Ideally, the rack/chassis shall reside in an indoor climate-controlled environment. Additionally, if a 19” server chassis is utilized, adequate airflow through the chassis and clearance of at least 6 inches (153mm) from the front doors of the chassis must be ensured.

Do not install the Onyx FHM where the relative humidity of the surrounding air can exceed 95% or where it will be exposed to falling or dripping water or other liquid contaminates.

To best ensure long-term performance of the Onyx FHM, install the device in a location with minimal dust in the environment, or where dust mitigation (air filtering) is present.

## Connecting Earth Ground

Grounding of the chassis is required prior to powering the unit. Grounding is required to reduce or prevent the risk of shock hazards, equipment damage, and the potential of data corruption.

A grounding lug, M4 screws, and washers are provided with the package contents, however, the grounding wire is not included. For convenience, there are two locations on the case in which the grounding lug may be fixed.

The following instructions are for grounding the equipment:

{% hint style="warning" %}
**CAUTION:** This equipment must be grounded. Do not defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment without correctly grounding the equipment. If there is any uncertainty about the integrity of the equipment's grounding, please contact your local electrical inspection authority or a certified electrician.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Before grounding the equipment, ensure that the rack is properly grounded and in compliance with local regulatory guidelines. Ensure that there is nothing that can obstruct the connection for grounding and remove any paint or materials that may prevent good grounding contact.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Strip 0.5” +/-0.02” (12.7mm +/-0.5mm) of insulation from a size #6 AWG green and yellow grounding wire of adequate length to reach the rack or other grounding terminal block. Note that this wire is not provided with the installation kit.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert the exposed grounding wire all the way into the barrel of the grounding lug that is provided in the installation kit.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Using a crimping tool or a crimping tool with dies sized for a #6 AWG Grounding Lug, deform the barrel of the lug such that the stripped wire is contacted, compressed and secured in place.

<p align="center"><strong>Typical Crimping of 2-Hole Grounding Lug</strong></p>

<figure><img src="https://4084968256-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FgSxa0NIdBp5aDw7Lf2N9%2Fuploads%2Fye1TcdZ7iwypkiyPtiF9%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=6debec7b-1c41-4ecc-b548-7879f66ad88d" alt="" width="436"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
After crimping, firmly grasp the 2-Hole Grounding Lug and pull on the wire to ensure adequate crimp and retention of the wire into the connector.

{% hint style="info" %}
**NOTE:** If the stripped wire dislodges from the Grounding Lug, a new #6 AWG Grounding Lug will be required. It is suggested to source Panduit P/N LCDX6-10A-L if additional grounding logs are required. Revise crimping process as necessary to adequately deform the barrel of the grounding lug to securely clamp the stripped wire and provide low resistance electrical contact.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Locate the designated location for securing the grounding lug on the right side of the Onyx FHM. This area is free of paint and has threaded holes sized for the included M4, 8mm Long Screws.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert 2 pcs. of the M4, 8mm Long screws through 2 pcs. of the M4 Star Washers that are provided with the Onyx FHM.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert screws through the 2 holes of the crimped Grounding Lug and install additional 2 pcs. (1 Each) of M4 Star Washers provided with the Onyx FHM onto the M4 screws behind the crimped Grounding Lug, as shown in the following figure.

## Applying Power

The following sections detail the installation of the field replaceable power supply units (PSU) and the connection to the AC Line to power the Onyx FHM.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**WARNING:** The AC Line of the Onyx FHM can present dangerous voltage. Contact with the line voltage can result in pain or injury.

1\. Verify that the chassis ground of the Onyx FHM is connected to an earth ground before connecting AC Power Cable to the Onyx FHM unit.

2\. Verify that the AC Line has a quality signal ground integrated with a circuit breaker prior to applying AC Line Power to the Onyx FHM.

3\. Ensure that line voltage is not present when plugging the AC Power Cable to the PSUs of the unit. Only plug units into AC Line voltage after they are connected to the Onyx FHM.
{% endhint %}

The PSUs are pre-installed in the Onyx FHM. The PSU is a hot swappable field replaceable unit (FRU) and can be replaced while the equipment is operating if the remaining (second) PSU is installed and in operation.

The following instructions detail how to install a new PSU field FRU in the Onyx FHM.

### PSU Replacement

{% hint style="danger" %}
**WARNING:** Shock hazard! For safety, disconnect power input cable from the power supply unit before servicing the equipment.
{% endhint %}

#### PSU FRU Removal

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Locate the release tab on the PSU FRU and press and hold the blue release tab to the right to unlock the PSU from the power bay.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
While holding down the release tab, grip the PSU's handle and firmly pull it out of the power bay.

<p align="center"><strong>PSU FRU Removal</strong></p>

<figure><img src="https://4084968256-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FgSxa0NIdBp5aDw7Lf2N9%2Fuploads%2FSzOxynLZZeRpScZdMGMF%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=39038f88-5d1c-4710-a4b4-5290a52fc9a1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

#### PSU FRU Installation

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Align the new PSU with the empty power bay, ensuring the PSU’s power connector is in the correct orientation (see Figure 24).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Carefully slide the new PSU into the power bay and gently push until the front surface of the PSU is flush with the front surface of the case.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
An audible click will be heard when the PSU is installed correctly. The PSU will not go in all the way if it is inserted in the wrong orientation.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**CAUTION:** If the insertion of the PSU results in either significant resistance or a hard stop, remove the PSU and inspect it for correct orientation and/or damage. If damage is found or insertion issues persist, contact your supplier for replacement of the PSU. Do not attempt to repair a damaged PSU.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Ensure there is enough power available on the selected electrical circuit to supply the Onyx FHM. The maximum system power consumption is 188.22 watts with an input voltage of 100-240V AC. It is recommended to ensure that enough power is available from the power distribution system prior to installation.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
The Onyx-FRU is designed to support 1 + 1 power redundancy. Ensure that both PSU FRUs have been properly installed before powering up the equipment.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert the AC PSU Cable Receptacle of 1 pc. of the included power cords into the AC PSU ensuring that it is fully inserted.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert the standard AC Plug into the desired AC outlet. If necessary, switch on power strip that PSU(s) are plugged into.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Verify that the power supply is operating. The LED on the PSU will illuminate Green designating normal operation.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.gxc.io/hw/5g/5g-fronthaul-multiplexer/fhm-hardware-installation-guide.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
