#### Core System Components

* **Onyx Edge: Integrated Edge Compute Platform** – A compact, all-in-one on-site appliance that integrates the 5G Core, Central Unit (CU), and Distributed Unit (DU). Onyx Edge enables low latency, local breakout, and on-premises application hosting—streamlining deployment and reducing external dependencies.
* **5G Core (5GC)** – Embedded within Onyx Edge, the 5G Core manages control and user plane functions such as authentication, session management, and mobility handling. This ensures data sovereignty and real-time responsiveness for enterprise applications.
* **Radio Access Network (RAN)** – Implements a 3-layer RU–DU–CU architecture using the O-RAN 7.2x functional split. Real-time processing occurs at the edge (DU), while the CU handles centralized control—enabling proximity-based radio access and high-performance, low-latency communications.
* **Transport Layer** – Connects the Onyx Edge to distributed RUs via high-speed, time-synchronized links using IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE). This enables deterministic performance, low jitter, and precise timing for 5G fronthaul and TDD alignment.
* **Fronthaul Multiplexer (FHM)** – Aggregates and synchronizes traffic between the DU and connected RUs. FHM abstracts individual RUs into a unified radio layer, simplifies network design, and ensures cohesive coverage with minimal operational overhead.
* **Onyx Portal** – A cloud-native management interface providing a single pane of glass for configuring, monitoring, and managing private networks. It offers real-time visibility into network, equipment, and subscriber metrics, simplifying enterprise deployment and operations. The portal also supports integration with external systems via open APIs.

* **Mesh Node** – Enables wireless backhaul between a GXC Gateway Node and Access Points (APs) using self-interference mitigation techniques. Paired with a Mesh AP and orchestrated via the Onyx Platform, it delivers rapid, cable-free coverage extension—ideal for environments where wired infrastructure is unavailable.

#### Functional Capabilities

* **5G Standalone** – 5G deployment model that delivers low latency, high throughput, and flexible architecture through an on-premises, service-based core.
* **Open RAN-based Private Wireless** – Offers significant advantages including reduced costs using commercial off-the-shelf components, flexibility in selecting edge compute and radio units from multiple vendors, and support for a wide range of global frequency bands. Additionally, it enables transparent and touchless software upgrades, supports feature evolution—such as ultra-low latency, RedCap, and zero-frame drop broadcasting—without requiring hardware replacement. Critically, it allows for phased integration with existing infrastructure, avoiding costly rip-and-replace scenarios while ensuring scalable, future-ready connectivity.
* **Shared Cell Architecture with a Unified Radio Layer** – Enables multiple RUs to function as a single logical cell under one DU enabling more efficient spectrum utilization. This architecture improves user mobility, eliminates intercell interference, and simplifies RF planning—particularly in high-density environments like factories and warehouses.
* **DAS Support and Integration** – Support for both passive and active Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) enabling shared infrastructure for public and private networks. It supports 1, 2, or 4-port MIMO distribution, automatic CBRS SAS registration, and both RF and O-RAN DAS interfaces—delivering centralized, cost-effective coverage even in complex venues.
* **High-Capacity, Flexible Spectrum Support** – Supports up to eight simultaneous carrier frequencies and synchronized TDD operation, allowing for optimized uplink/downlink balance, expanded coverage, and efficient spectrum utilization.
* **CBRS and Open Standards Support** – Fully compatible with CBRS and other localized spectrum bands. Adheres to O-RAN and 3GPP standards, ensuring vendor interoperability and seamless integration into existing enterprise IT infrastructure.
* **End-to-End Security** – Embedded across all layers, including SIM-based authentication, role-based access control, traffic segmentation, encryption, and secure management protocols. This ensures robust security and regulatory compliance.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.gxc.io/docs/solution-briefs/5g-onyx-architecture-solution-brief.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
